Choosing a profession is arguably one of the biggest decisions you’ll have to make in your life. Apart from the other heavy hitters like who you want to marry or where you want to settle down, choosing a profession has the likelihood of changing your entire life.

For that reason, you need to be incredibly careful. It’s normal if you feel nervous. As a young man, this decision can be a bit overwhelming. But it doesn’t have to be so hard. You can still do it without making too much of a mistake. How? By arming yourself with the knowledge and information you need to make the decision.

Thankfully, we’ll be discussing how you can choose a profession in four easy ways. Pay attention!

  1. Perform a comprehensive self-assessment

In choosing a profession, you need to be careful to pick something that is just right for you. If you choose one that is too skewed in the wrong direction, the chances are that you might end up hating the job and spending your life working a job that you absolutely rue.

But, if the main reason you’re here is because you’re trying to leave a job you don’t like, we might have something for you. While it’s not going to teach you about getting a new job immediately, it’ll tell you how to handle the job you don’t fancy before you choose a different profession. Check it out here.

Now that that’s out of the way, perform a comprehensive self-assessment. Find out what you’re interested in. What exactly do you like? If you had the opportunity to grow from scratch, would you be willing to do so in this profession? Besides that, what are your strengths and weaknesses? How do they affect your ability to perform in different fields? Are you good with designs, or you’re better with words? Figure out who you are and what you like.

  1. Build a list of careers that fall in line with the results of your assessment

After you’ve taken complete care to ensure that you find out what you want and who you are as a professional, find out the jobs that appeal to you. For example, if you’re interested in design and you have an eye for it, find out the jobs that are related to design, from graphics to user interface development. Make your list as comprehensive as possible, and then start learning more about these jobs one after the other.

  1. Shrink the list to two or five options

After building your list, now you have to take it down a notch. Which ones are perfectly suited to you? You should be able to tell this based on your level of interest in the job as well as the requirements in the job. When you have your final two or five options, move on to the next step.

  1. Figure out what your goals are

What do you want to achieve in life? Where do you want to be in the next few years? Try to put these into perspective professionally. When you’ve figured out all your goals, look at your list of 2-5 options. Whichever fits the most perfectly into them is the most likely to be your actual profession.

Final Words

Now, we must confess, these final words have nothing to do with choosing a profession. However, when you think about it, it can be pretty difficult to choose a profession in an environment where things aren’t exactly encouraging. For a while now, youths all over the country have been lending their voices to help end police brutality and improve the quality of governance in Nigeria. We’re not asking you to go and start a riot or cause troubles in a protest.

However, what we are saying is that you should do what you can. If you are in a position of power, consistently work to ensure that you are doing what you should for your people. If you know someone in a position of power, help them to understand the situation of the country. If you happen to be a regular citizen, lend your voice and resources to help the cause. We can make Nigeria better. But, we have to work together. So, men of valour, let us work together!
