I am struggling with porn addiction. I thought it was fun when I got introduced to it. Now, I realise it is a real problem and I’d really love to be free. Please help.

Our Response

Kenneth, we’d like to commend you for not only coming to terms with the fact that pornography is harmful but also going further to seek help. One of the problems with pornography is the double life that it causes you to live as you try to hide this habit, especially from close friends and people that matter to you. So the first step to freedom is to be open about it.

If you’re married or engaged, tell your wife or fiancée about it and let her know how long it has been going on. Yes, it may be difficult but this is an intimate part of you that directly affects your sexuality. So you shouldn’t hide it from your wife or someone you’re in a serious relationship with. It is also important that you open up and be accountable to a spiritual authority that you respect and whose guidance you trust. This helps a lot.

Furthermore, destroy materials and avoid environments that feed this habit. And more importantly, seek to discover God’s purpose for your life and commit yourself to diligently living it out. Being busy with your life purpose will keep you away from frivolities and lustful behaviours. If you diligently apply the aforementioned principles, you will be on your way to freedom from pornography. However, if it has become an addiction, you may need to seek professional help.
