I’ve been involved in masturbation for over ten years now and each time I’m involved in this act I feel relieved. But often times, I’ve heard teachings that this act is wrong. Is masturbation right? How can I stop it?

Answer

Thanks for writing in, Bamidele. As regards your question about whether masturbation is right, God’s original intention for sexual pleasure is for it to be enjoyed between a married couple – man and woman. Any deviation from this is an aberration. Masturbation, like every other form of sexual activity, begins in the mind; hence, stopping it will require taking charge of your mind. You need to exercise conscious control over your thoughts by:

  1. Deliberately replacing lustful thoughts with wholesome thoughts. Each time you have the urge to masturbate, consciously engage your mind in the opposite direction by focusing it on other issues such as your career, spiritual growth, personal development etc.
  2. Physically engaging yourself in more profitable activities. You cannot masturbate when you are not idle.
  3. Controlling your environment. Whenever you feel like masturbating, change environment. You can take a walk for instance or simply deprive yourself of undue privacy.
