If we are to be honest, the internet is crawling with time management tips to be more effective. Unfortunately, not all of these are particularly excellent. As a matter of fact, an overabundance of them can lead to what is known as “information overload”. You’ll get so overwhelmed with people saying this and that and eventually, you’ll not be able to do anything with all the information you have.
The truth is that time management is quite delicate and it requires some form of discipline. It is not something you just wake up one morning and decide to be perfect at. This is why we will be treating it as a topic. It might be a great idea to fasten your seatbelt now.
What is Time Management?
Time management is the process of utilizing your time effectively to achieve the best results when required. Now, it doesn’t necessarily mean that you must learn how to fly an airplane and sail a ship in less than thirty minutes while still having time for a nice tea party. No. The key phrase is “achieving the best results when required.”
What are the best time management tips to be more effective?
There are a legion of them. However, we’ll be looking at just three actionable and powerful time management tips to be more effective. They are:
1. Set SMART goals
Contrary to what you might think, there is no error of capitalization there. SMART is an acronym which stands for Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, and Time-bound. This is the right way to set a goal. It is much better than to simply say you want to have a million dollars.
With SMART goals, you can say you want to start earning 50% more money every year starting in three years’ time. However, you won’t be working more than three high paying jobs. This helps you manage your time better because you have a drive in the form of a realistic goal to achieve.
2. Eliminate distractions
This part is so important that I cannot bear to leave it out. When you are trying to manage your time effectively, your worst enemy is that cool YouTube channel or that funny clip on Instagram. As much as you can, eliminate every distraction. That way, you would be able to focus much more easily and you can manage your time effectively to achieve your goals. Besides, too much social media isn’t good for you.
3. Take a break occasionally
When you are trying to be more effective, it is absolutely normal for you to want to work for several hours at a stretch. After all, if you want to do it, you might as well make it fast. Well, while this might seem like a good idea, it is actually quite questionable. This is so because the longer you stay awake at work, the less cognitive function your brain has. As such, take a break every now and then. The goal isn’t to work for multiple hours on end but to stay effective for as long as humanly possible.
Being effective is more of a process than an act. It takes a while for it to happen and when it does, you need to continue doing it for it to become permanent. Keep inculcating our tips in your everyday life till effectiveness becomes a habit for you.
