On a general level, people will talk to you about work ethic and how you should behave in the office. For what it’s worth, these pieces of information are quite important as they help you to act in the right way when you’re in a place of business. However, just as you’re learning to deal with everyone generically, you should pay special care to the proper conduct around women in your office.
Now, this is not to say that women, or anyone, should be given partial treatment. No, the entire purpose of this article is to groom you on how to respect and act around your female colleagues at your place of work. So, without further ado, here are some tips to help you maintain excellent relationships with the opposite sex in the office.
Hold off on terms of endearments
You know how you wouldn’t call your male boss “bro” or “sure guy.” Well, you should extend that formality to the women in your office as well. You don’t need to call them “dear” or “sweetheart” and “baby.” Simply refer to the women in your office as you normally would refer to anyone else.
Do not make dirty jokes
Dirty jokes are a part of virtually every male conversation. For some guys, it’s just another day and just another conversation. However, you must make sure that this doesn’t spill into your workplace. So, when you’re talking to your female colleagues, do not crack any dirty jokes, no matter how funny you think they are. Why? It is inappropriate, a sign of bad manners, and doesn’t make for proper conduct around women in the office.
Don’t refuse solitude with her
In the process of maintaining a proper relationship with women at work, some might go as far as completely alienating them. For those people, their mentality is that they can’t say something wrong if they don’t say anything at all. Well, we’re sorry to burst your bubble, but that’s wrong too, as it counts as discriminatory treatment. So, include her in your meetings and brunches/dinners.
Maintain eye contact when necessary
One of the worst things you could do at work with a female colleague is to stare at her bosom while you’re talking to her. Not only is it considered a sign of perversion, but it is also disrespectful. Even if you think she can’t tell that you’re doing it, the chances are that she probably can. As such, and we cannot emphasize this enough, keep your eyes focused on her face when you’re having her conversation with a female colleague.
Don’t undermine her work
This is especially so if she’s working just as hard as anyone on the team. If you’re her boss, you should always make sure that you commend her work when she deserves it. Even if she has made a mistake, ensure that you correct her in the same way you would correct everyone else, without being condescending. Whatever you do, just make sure that you are not speaking ill of her work or the effort she puts into it.
